How is BMI calculated?
The formula to calculate BMI is: BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) * height (m)).
How to interpret BMI results for adults?
For adults, BMI is interpreted using the following categories. These categories are same for both men and women, and all ages above 20 years old.
- Underweight: BMI below 18.5.
- Normal weight: BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.
- Overweight: BMI of 25 to 29.9.
- Obese: BMI of 30 or higher.
How to interpret BMI results for children and teenagers?
For children and teenagers younger than 20 years old, BMI is calculated the same way. But interpretation for children BMI also needs age and gender information, as body fat changes with age and gender.
For children and teenagers, BMI is interpreted by determining the percentile of the BMI on the CDC BMI growth chart for the age and gender.
- Underweight: BMI less than 5th percentile.
- Normal weight: BMI of 5th percentile to less than 85th percentile.
- Overweight: BMI of 85th percentile to less than 95th percentile.
- Obese: BMI of 95th percentile or higher.
